Sun, surf and sand - it's a tiny tropical paradise in the South Pacific - and home to just over fifty people. And although residents of the Pitcairn islands pay no tax, they get tens of thousands of pounds per person, each year - straight from the pockets of British taxpayers. Tesa Arcilla reports on where all that money is going. In this video you see the world's only flying example of the 1932 Pitcairn PA-18 Autogyro. This video comprises of both evening demonstration flights of this aircraft during Airventure 2009. There is one other example of this aircraft that is currently being restored to flying condition. The rest of the Pitcairn PA-18's that were built now rest on the bottom of the Atlantic after the boat transporting them to England was sunk by a German vessel during World War Two. This particular PA-18 finally made it to Oshkosh after being damaged prior to it's planned visit in 2007. The rotor blades were destroyed on takeoff about a month prior to Airventure 2007. They were rebuilt, and the aircraft made the two day flight from Dayton, Ohio this year. Enjoy!
"The development of air travel depends almost entirely on safety. One contribution to safety is the auto giro 'plane, and although many of us have seen one, we believe this to be the first explanation of the machine's working." M/S of a man standing beside a Pitcairn PAA-1 auto giro. He speaks slowly and in a rather posh American voice about the working of the aircraft. Closer shot of the man as he uses a model of an "ordinary airplane" to illustrate how the auto giro is different. C/U of the model in his hands as he speaks of air pressure and how this keeps the plane in the air. C/U of the blades of the auto giro - miniature airplane wings. The man explains how the blades work automatically. The man then picks up a model of an auto giro and describes how the propeller provides for...
Some of the clearest water I've ever swam in. The highlight of the trip for me. You sit at the entrance and wait for the waves to smash over the rocks and get engulfed in white wash. Towards the end you can see the blow hole where the air comes up through the water.
